An occasionally cultivated European native, our only record was collected by Sister Vincent de Paul in 1926 in Oakland Co. No habitat was given, but this is more likely a plant of shadier and somewhat moister habitats than typical for our other weedy Silene species. Stem leaves are generally broader than in either S. latifolia or S. noctiflora. The flowers are bright pink or pinkish-purple, not at all the fiery red of S. virginica, and do not have the petals cleft into two lance-acute lobes.

Pale pink-flowered plants from Hillsdale Co. (E. G. Voss 8782A in 1959, MICH) have been determined by H. C. Prentice as a hybrid of this species with S. latifolia (S. ×hampeana Meusel & K. Werner), which apparently can occur whenever the two come into contact. Some Lenawee Co. collections also appear to be this.
