Peatlands, especially fens and cedar or tamarack swamps; calcareous marshy shores and stream margins.
Easily distinguished from L. villosa and L. canadensis by the absence of long (and ± tawny) cilia and the presence of downy pubescence on the undersides of the leaves. The 2-lipped aspect of the corolla is best displayed in fresh specimens. The fruits are sometimes rather purplish red.
