Aster furcatus of Michigan Flora.
This is a rare aster throughout its range, from southern Michigan and Wisconsin to Missouri, in moist forests on calcareous soils, especially along rivers. The leaves are distinctly scabrous above and the rays normally white.
Very local in Michigan, but it can form large colonies from rhizomes. This has quite a small range globally, mostly in the upper midwest. Michigan is at the eastern limit of its range, and the Monroe Co. occurrence in SE Michigan appears to be the only one in the Lake Erie basin, but the record, from along the River Raisin at Dundee, dates from 1906.
