In our flora, Eurybia are broad-leaved, colonial forest understory species with corymbose inflorescences of large heads (by aster standards). The more eastern E. divaricata (L.) G. L. Nesom has been reported from Michigan but thus far all specimens so named have been misidentified.

  2. Leaves not strongly reduced below the inflorescence, even the uppermost leaves with their tips extending beyond the width of the inflorescence; leaves with spreading hairs on the undersurface.

E. furcata

  2. Leaves strongly reduced below the unflorescence, the uppermost usually with tips shorter than the width of the inflorescence; leaves hairless on the undersurface, except sometimes along the main veins.
