We have a single, absolutely distinctive species, the leaves modified into a pitcher-like shape in which water accumulates, drowning insects and other small organisms that slip into it, foiled in their escape by downward-pointing hairs on the inside of the pitcher. The plants derive some nutrients from this source of protein. Other species occur in the southeastern States.
