Sporadic in sunny, dry disturbed areas, near habitation usually; occasionally planted for its showy yellow to orange flowers, but native south and west of Michigan. First collected in 1900 by E. J. Cole in a meadow along a road near Grand Rapids, Kent Co. Also collected as an “accidental” in a nursery on Mackinac Island (W. H. Manning n.d. [1915?], GH). Known from only a few other scattered occurrences.
