A native species, but usually found in disturbed ground; roadsides, railroads, fields, gravel pits, trails; also on disturbed shores and in open rocky (calcareous) forests. Collected as early as 1832 by Douglass Houghton (in Houghton County). The Michigan plants are var. brachycarpa (Richardson) Detling.
