Wet places in sphagnum mats, sandy-mucky shores, and other boggy places.
The leaves of our plants are very frequently not papillose, as often described for this species. Our other two Xyris are larger, basically southern species, most common in the southwestern Lower Peninsula, and absent from much of the Upper Peninsula.
