A slender tap-rooted annual, originally native in the Mediterranean region and widely cultivated, sometimes escaping to roadsides, fields, shores, cultivated ground, dumps, and other disturbed places. First collected in 1894 in Wayne Co.
Normally a bright blue, cultivars with pink and white flowers are known. An older Farwell collection from Houghton Co. is white flowered, cv Alba.
