Parasitic on a diversity of gymnosperms and angiosperms, usually on sandy (or rock) ridges or dunes at the borders of conifer thickets and forests, mostly not far from the shores of the Great Lakes; rarely in bogs or fens with Chamaedaphne and Thuja. Often overlooked when the inconspicuous axillary flowers are in bloom, but quite striking when bearing the ripe bright orange-red fruit.
