A densely prickly plant, with large, thick, rugose leaflets and large red-purple (or white) flowers. The thick pubescence tends to obscure any stalked glands that may also be present. The has large, rather fleshy fruits and is sometimes cultivated for rose hips as well as being used in breeding for its exceptional cold hardiness.
