Sandy (or gravelly) shores and dunes along the Great Lakes and nearby old shore ridges; on rocks at Isle Royale. Our plants are almost all the showy red- or maroon-flowered f. sanguinea (Pursh) Fernald yet, at the only known station on the south shore of Lake Superior, on the Grand Sable dunes, f. multifida with yellowish or cream perianth is found. Plants of dunes on the north shore of Lake Superior, in Ontario, are similar, but plants of rocks at Isle Royale have the perianth red-colored (though the red is often somewhat paler).
