Often in the same rich deciduous forests as A. pachypoda, but also in a broader range of mixed and coniferous forests and swamps, with aspen, oak and hickory, cedar, spruce and fir, hemlock, or tamarack. Plants with the fruit a pure white, f. neglecta (Gillman) B. L. Rob., are frequent, sometimes locally more common than the red-fruited form, with which they are often growing. They differ from A. pachypoda in their slender, ± dull-colored (basically greenish) pedicels and smaller “eye” formed by the persistent stigma.
See under Actaea pachypoda for rare hybrids.
