Dry open forests (e.g., oak-hickory), shores, prairie-like areas.
The inflorescence is dense and contracted, rather resembling that of Koeleria macrantha, while in S. intermedia it is more open and lax. All our material has glabrous or finely scabrous sheaths and blades, although more pubescent sheaths are reported elsewhere in this species.
The Houghton and Keweenaw Co. records are mapped with some doubt. Both were gathered by O. A. Farwell in 1926; each specimen, however, being one of Farwell's notorious "½" numbers, there is substantial suspicion of label error. Otherwise the species has never been seen in the Upper Peninsula.
