Usually in forested places (oak, beech-maple), often on the moist side but sometimes in dry open forests and adjacent fields; commonly on hummocks, especially in moister settings.
Unusually robust plants with panicle branches as long as 12 cm will have the wider leaf blades much broader than in A. hyemalis and A. scabra and thus may be readily distinguished.
