A Eurasian native, sometimes cultivated and apparently more often escaping than V. austriaca and V. officinalis; first collected in 1885 in Ingham Co. Lawns, roadsides, hillside banks, disturbed ground, trails, invading coniferous and deciduous forests.

This species has a more open raceme than V. austriaca (the flowers more widely spaced).
