This species is native from western Minnesota westward, and is occasionally adventive eastward, as along a roadside west of Trout Lake (Mackinac Co.), where it was collected in 1984 by M. R. Penskar, D. Henson, W. W. Brodowicz, and D. A. Albert. Here, it was hybridizing with A. syriaca. The hoods of the hybrid are ca. 5.5–7 mm long, quite intermediate between those of the parents, and the appearance of the plant is intermediate in other aspects as well.
