Northern hardwood or mixed conifer-hardwood forests, usually over calcareous rock outcrops, usually on boulders or low, mossy ledges; very rarely on steep slopes in forests lacking exposed bedrock such as on forested dune slopes near Lake Michigan. Also occasional in more open areas in sites like deep crevices in sunny bedrock exposures.
Especially frequent in rocky woods on the Niagara Escarpment in the eastern Upper Peninsula.
