Local, but often common where found, on sandy-mucky, often marly, shores and in marshy hollows. Like its most interesting associates (Fuirena pumila, Lipocarpha micrantha, Rhynchospora scirpoides, etc.), it seems to thrive on recently exposed shores and dried lake beds. This is a species of primarily Coastal Plain distribution, extending northward in the Mississippi Valley and recurring in the western Great Lakes area.
