Sandy, usually disturbed places such as dunes, shores, trails and roads in jack pine, oak, or aspen forests.

Resembles C. schweinitzii rather closely but generally smaller in size overall. This species apparently originated as a stabilized hybrid of C. lupulinus and C. schweinitzii (Marcks, 1974).
