Shallow water in rivers and on river shores; spreads extensively by rhizomes to form large dense colonies. Very local, along the Huron, Raisin, and St. Joseph rivers and connected lakes and streams. 

The flowers have white corollas with one or more lobes purple or streaked with purple and are crowded into small dense heads on axillary peduncles (4.5-) 6-11 cm long.
