Home Cyperaceae Carex

Carex billingsii (O. W. Knight) C. D. Kirschbaum

Common Name: SEDGE
Coefficient of Conservatism: 10
Coefficient of Wetness: -5
Wetness Index: OBL
Physiognomy: Nt P-Sedge

Included in C. trisperma in Michigan Flora.

Sphagnum bogs, usually on hummocks and typically in more sunny sites than the closely related Carex trisperma. Very local, but only recently recognized as a distinct species (Kirschbaum 2007), and perhaps somewhat overlooked. The filiform-involute leaves give this somewhat the look of the upland Carex eburnea, but topped with inflorescences resembling those of C. trisperma.
