Eupatorium maculatum of Michigan Flora.
Marshes, meadows, swales, wet prairies and fields, shores, bogs and fens, cedar swamps, thickets, moist clearings and roadsides, moist hollows, borders of lakes and streams.
The heads are rarely white [f. faxonii Fernald]; such plants have been collected in Bay, Ontonagon, and Washtenaw Cos. Our common plant, found throughout, is var. maculatum, with stems sparsely puberulent to more or less glabrous. The western var. bruneri (A. Gray) E. E. Lamont, with stems densely puberulent throughout, is found in the Keweenaw Co. mainland and Isle Royale, and the more eastern var. foliosum (Fernald) E. E. Lamont, with large uppermost stem leaves equaling or surpassing the heads, is scattered in the Upper Peninsula.
