Oak, aspen, and beech-maple forests, especially along borders and stream banks; moist ground including floodplains and riverside thickets; and the usual field and fencerow habitats of other hawthorns.
The widespread var. coccinea has ovate leaves with fruit bright red, var. pringlei (Sarg.) J. A. Macklin & J. B. Phipps (C. pringlei of Michigan Flora) has leaves broadly elliptic to elliptic ovate and fruits dull dark red and is recorded thus far only from Ingham Co. Use of the name C. coccinea follows Phipps, Cafferty, & Macklin (2003).
