Local, and seldom noticed, in mixed forests and swamps (often on hummocks or mossy logs), coniferous swamps and thickets by shores, jack pine and mixed forests on sandy soil along Lake Superior dunes, peaty places (seldom on sedge mats), especially along trails.
Our plants are subsp. brachypoda (A. Gray) Á. Löve & D. Löve or var. brachypoda (A. Gray) F. Morris, with the lip lowermost, now often recognized as M. brachypoda (A. Gray) Fernald.
