Sandy or muddy banks, shores, and margins of rivers, streams, and lakes. More recently, this species has been adapting to sidewalk cracks and cracks in parking lots in urban areas, and several recent collections (and more observations) are from this habitat.
The dried plants, even when old, frequently have a pleasant odor, like that of sweet-clover (Melilotus).
