Carex spicata Huds.

Common Name: SEDGE
Coefficient of Conservatism: *
Coefficient of Wetness: 3
Wetness Index: FACU
Physiognomy: Ad P-Sedge

A European species, one of our few introduced Carex, occurring in grassy disturbed forests and fencerows, often in urban areas. First collected in 1965 in Huron Co. More common eastward, especially in southern Ontario.

A distinctive species in its large perigynia, nerveless ventrally and weakly nerved dorsally, reddish brown scales with green midrib, and long ligules. Probably somewhat overlooked since this sedge is fond of occurring in urban settings.
