As with cultivated crabapples, ornamental (and edible) pears are beginning to appear frequently in fields and roadsides. And as with crabapples, they are variable and difficult to identify. More collections are needed.

2. Calyx lobes persistent in fruit; fruits ca. 3-8 in diameter, usually elongated ("pear-shaped" or ellipsoid); leaves with marginal cilia and pubescence on the midvein on the upper leaf surface (especially near apex) persistent most of the season.

2. Calyx lobes deciduous; fruits ca. 1.5-2 cm in diameter, round; leaves essentially glabrous on the upper surface and margins even at flowering time.
