These are very glaucous plants with spiny-margined leaves, spiny fruits and buds (sepals), and large showy flowers. Besides the two species recorded here, others are in cultivation.
1. Corolla white, over (5-) 6 cm in diameter; stamens over 100; leaves without pale markings.
1. Corolla yellow, less than 5 (-6) cm in diameter; stamens ca. 50 or fewer; leaves with conspicuous pale green or whitish markings along the main veins.
