In moist ground of all sorts, open or (usually) ± forested (hardwoods rather than conifers); mostly in acidic, sandy soils.
Our specimens are almost all var. rudgei L. H. Bailey, with perigynia less than 6.8 mm long; very rarely seen in extreme southwestern Michigan (specimens known from Berrien and Cass Cos.) is var. debilis, with most perigynia more than 6.8 mm long.
