Very rare, on rock outcrops.
Sometimes confused with Stellaria borealis, which has glabrous stems, sparsely ciliate leaves, and petals usually absent; M. macrophylla has puberulent stems (and peduncles), non-ciliate leaves, and conspicuous petals.
