A boreal and western species barely ranging south to Lake Superior. It is frequent along the north shore in Ontario. Spruce-fir forests and borders, rocky openings, stream banks.
Especially striking in fruit: the large glossy nearly black berries are set on a shining red involucre.
A specimen from Bay Co., (Bradford in 1894, MSC) seems so far out of range as to suggest a label error, and is not mapped.
