Usually a calciphile and often associated with grasses and sedges including hummocks in wet habitats; marshes (if not too wet), ditches, swales; sedge and other fens, cedar and tamarack swamps; meadows, shores, stream and pond borders.
The corolla is pale blue, often nearly white. Smaller-flowered plants with narrowly elliptic leaves are var. aparinoides, a southern taxon known from southwestern Michigan (Berrien, Kalamazoo, and Kent Cos.). Our plants are mostly var. grandiflora Holz., long known as C. uliginosa Rydb., with flowers running a bit larger on average and the leaves more linear. The distinctions are not sharp, and most authors no longer recognize the two as separate species.
