A native of Europe, escaped from cultivation. Roadsides, overgrown dumps and weedy thickets, river borders, sometimes well established in moist forests (deciduous or coniferous). First collected in Michigan in 1886 in Kent Co.
Hesperis begins blooming several weeks later, mid-May, than the somewhat similar Lunaria annua, which starts to bloom as early as late April.
