A. rugosa of Michigan Flora.
A common tall shrub in older zones of bogs, along lakes and streams, in extensive mucky swamps, and in all sorts of wetlands. Our plants are subsp. rugosa (Du Roi) Clausen; subsp. incana is restricted to Europe.
The pistillate aments are often attacked by a fungus (Taphrina), which causes hypertrophy; the resulting elongate proliferations from the ament are quite unlike the normal scales and are easily recognized as an abnormality.
