Calcareous rock outcrops, usually limestone or sandstone, mostly in partial shade or shade.
This is a fertile hexaploid derived from the diploid C. bulbifera and the tetraploid C. fragilis. Reports of C. tennesseensis Shaver from limestone outcrops in northern Michigan appear to be based on specimens of C. laurentiana.
