Old fields and thickets. This small tree is native to much of the eastern United States south of Michigan, and sparingly escaped in the southern Great Lakes region.
Occasionally cultivated in southern Michigan for fruit, and collected naturalized in a small grove in Berrien Co. by J. Sulman in 2019.
