Weedy sunny roadsides. This native of southern Europe and western Asia is a semi-evergreen, thorny shrub or small tree (in warmer climates), sparingly escaped in the southern Great Lakes region.

Cultivated in southern Michigan for dense thorny hedges, and for its showy bright red or orange fruit that persists into winter, this was collected spreading and established along a roadside in Berrien Co. by J. Sulman in 2019.
