Rich floodplains and upland beech-maple forests.
Rarely seen except in Berrien Co., where rare yellow petaled forms (forma shayi) have also been seen. Records from Washtenaw and Wayne Cos. probably represent escapes from cultivation, as this species is regularly grown in wildflower gardens. Unlike most Trillium, this forms colonies from creeping rhizomes.
