This is a taxon of the southeastern United States which was first observed in Michigan in 1950 in a mature beech-maple forest in Saginaw Co. (and collected in 1957). Like Trillium cuneatum, this is a favorite plant for shade gardens and is apparently spreading from cultivation elsewhere in Michigan (Case & Case, 1997), though herbarium documentation is sparse.
