Swamps, wet forested hollows, and shores; typically around ponds in forests or the edges of buttonbush marshes. Very rare in Michigan, and occurring in the wettest sites of any Populus.

The flowers are nearly distinctive in the genus for their long pedicels, although those of P. deltoides may also elongate. The leaves are the largest of any Populus.
