Shallow to deep, usually cold, water such as spring-fed lakes and streams.
In the absence of floating leaves or fruit, this species might be confused with P. illinoensis, but it can be distinguished by blunter stipules and leaves and by the reticulate zone along the midrib (giving the appearance of a broad midrib), as well as by the strong reddish color which develops on drying.
