Dry to moist, often sandy fields, excavations, and borders of marshes.
The flower color varies from bright pink-magenta to white (f. albiflora Wheelock). The broad compact inflorescence is rather similar to that of P. cruciata, which differs not only in its tendency to whorled leaves but also in its ± deltoid, almost caudate wings.
