Native in dry sandy or rocky ground mostly south of Michigan. Collected on the shore of Klinger Lake, St. Joseph Co., in 1890 and in railroad ballast near Schoolcraft (Kalamazoo Co.) in 1936 and later years (and presumably introduced at the latter site).
