In forests of all kinds (mixed forests, jack pines, oak, aspen), especially in openings and on sandy or rocky soil, but also in rich deciduous forests and in groves of pine and cedar.
A distinctive and attractive grass. The spikelets, especially the glumes, are usually strongly flushed with purplish, and the awns tend to be spreading.
