Found in a great variety of forests, including rich deciduous forests and hemlock-hardwoods, but most characteristic of rather dry open forests associated with jack pine, oak, and/or aspen; on forested dunes with pine and in rocky mixed forests.
This is a common forest understory grass, especially northward; the conspicuous inflorescences appear very early in the spring. Although many manuals state that the leaves are glaucous beneath, an examination of the leaves will show that it is the upper surface that is glaucous. Some plants on Isle Royale have both surfaces green.
