River and stream margins, ditches and swales, marshes, shores, bogs, meadows – often in shallow water.
A much more robust plant in all aspects than G. striata, with generally a stouter culm, broader leaf blades, and much larger panicles, the last usually 22–40 cm high (rarely as short as 13 cm). The spikelets are about 4–6.5 mm long.
