Chiefly along railroad tracks, but also in sandy or gravelly soil along roadsides, dumps, old fields, and other disturbed sites. Naturalized from Europe. Though now at least as frequent as E. cilianensis, especially northward, not collected in Michigan until 1905, in Wayne Co.
