Seemingly in a diversity of habitats, mostly near Lake Superior: sandy thickets and forests among dunes, deciduous forests, especially in rocky places; crevices of rock shores.
This is an extremely variable species in width and stiffness of inflorescence and straightness of awns; it is distinctive among our species in the very narrow thin hyaline borders on the glumes. The spikes of this species rather closely resemble those of E. repens or E. trachycaulus. See notes under those species.
