A weed in similar situations as D. ischaemum; also found occasionally in moist ground. More common in the southern Lower Peninsula. Naturalized from Europe but collected as early as 1838, by the First Survey in Kalamazoo Co.
The spikelets are usually glabrous or nearly so, especially between the nerves; if ciliate, the hairs are mostly not gland-tipped.
